Professional Interests

My career has touched on nearly all aspects of the interaction between people, technology, and information. This includes software design and development, knowledge and information management, risk management, communication, and design and innovation practice. Particular areas of interest include:

  • Software and Information Design. My design practice focuses on software, media, and information in all forms. I approach design problems by starting with field work to understand the community that shares in the target problem. My problem techniques include Activity Theory, Distributed Cognitioin, and a range of computer science analysis techniques. I design solutions using techniques including scenarios, personas, information design, and interactive prototypes. My design experience includes a wide range of software, and a wide range of business processes including portfolio, risk, and knowledge management systems.
  • Software engineering and Implementation. This is the area in which I was trained, and I still work in all aspects of system design, engineering, and implementation, with a special focus on object-oriented design and implementation, and interactive architectures.
  • Usability. Following the broader themes of this website, I distinguish usability (doing things better) from design (doing things differently). My usability practice includes evaluation and design of user interfaces, website design, and process improvement.
  • Innovation and Continuous Improvement Services. I have broad experience and interest in facilitating organizational improvement and innovation activities. A certified Lean/Six Sigma Black Belt, I have led Value Stream and Kaizen events for customers in manufacturing and business managment. My specialty is in innovation events, including design of software, business processes, communication, information, and, most importantly, systems that include all of these aspects.
  • Organizational field work. I have experience in studying the practices, comunication patterns, and information use of a range of organizations. Approaches include interviews, focus groups, participant and non-participant observations, and ethnographic studies.
  • Communication and media. In a natural extension of my other interests, I have worked in a broad range of communication and media design tasks, ranging from report writing to the design of promotional campaigns that include use of the web as well as print, broadcast, and other traditional media.
  • Teaching. I have over a decade of experience in designing and conducting technical training for industrial clients, and have also taught computer science and design at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
